It wasn't until Martina Bergman-Österberg recreated the game with rings with nets and it was moved outdoors and played on grass when it really became the game we all know and love.

Intially a woman's game due to the rules of less movement and contact. It has now become a sport that will even challenge those that are used to playing Basketball.

It is a team strategy game with team work, speed, agility and co-ordination that are key parts in the game. Where each player on the court has a role to play in order to help their team score a goal. From getting the ball off the opposing team, to defending the goal, to feeding the ball into the goal circle to take a shot at the netball ring.

Netball consists of 2 teams playing against each other. On a rectangle court, divided into thirds. Only 7 players from each team are allowed on court at all times, with substitutes waiting on the sidelines. Two umpires enforcing the rules of the game. Each on opposite sides of the court.

The aim of the game is to get the ball to the other side of the court so the goal-shoot (GS) and goal-attack (GA) can shoot the ball into the hoop. (Read more on netball positions here and the rules of netball here.)

Netball is a fun and active sport, with over 20 million players who love to play netball.
